FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT RADON TESTING
According to Cancer.org, “Getting your home tested for radon can help protect you and your family from a key cause of lung cancer. Exposure to radon accounts for about 21,000 deaths from lung cancer each year according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).”
Because this harmful, radioactive gas is odorless, tasteless and invisible, testing is the only way to know if your radon levels exceed the EPA’s recommended action level of 4.0 pCi/L.
Uranium and radium deposits in our soil can lead to high levels radon. The gas enters homes and buildings through cracks between floor boards, walls or foundation pylons around pipes and wires which are usually found below ground level. The highest levels of radon in a property are typically found at the lowest level including basements and crawl spaces. Radon gas is also able to penetrate the porous nature of concrete slabs.
Radon gas can also contaminate well and public water supplies. However, research shows that this type of exposure is less dangerous than exposure to radon gas through indoor breathing air.
According to the EPA, “Radon is a radioactive gas. It comes from the natural decay of uranium that is found in nearly all soils. It typically moves up through the ground to the air above and into your home through cracks and other holes in the foundation. Your home traps radon inside, where it can build up. Any home may have a radon problem. This means new and old homes, well-sealed and drafty homes, and homes with or without basements.”
Testing is critical because no structure is exempt from the possibility of having concentrated levels of radon gas unless radon resistant construction techniques were used or a mitigation system have been installed. Even, then, it is still highly recommended to test every 2 year to ensure all measures are working accurately.
“The average indoor radon level is estimated to be about 1.3 pCi/L, and about 0.4 pCi/L of radon is normally found in the outside air. The U.S. Congress has set a long-term goal that indoor radon levels be no more than outdoor levels. While this goal is not yet technologically achievable in all cases, most homes today can be reduced to 2 pCi/L or below, “ According to the EPA.
In many areas of central and northern New Mexico, indoor radon levels have been consistently above the EPA’s action level of 4.0 pCi/L.
